SMJ Mixtape Review - Conversational Lush - Elle Varner
The "Conversational Lush" mixtape is a tease from hot newcomer Elle Varner as we await her official debut album this year. Upon first listen, the album is very entertaining and upbeat showing off Elle's strong, raspy voice. What I enjoyed most about this mixtape is how well the stories were told on many of the songs.
A stand out track on this album is "WTF" a simple story about Elle having a bad day. To the casual listener, the song has a nice flow, but if you actually listen to the lyrics, the song comes alive. In the track "WTF" Her day starts with her car being broken into, later stopping by her boyfriend's house unannounced and finding her boyfriend in bed with another man, and while walking home, she gets stuck up and robbed for her purse. That's a helluva bad day!
"Runaway," is a tale told from the male and female perspective about running away from a relationship when things go awry. The chorus "you always wanna runaway, but you dont wanna be alone, you better run yourself back home." is quite catchy.
Other standout tracks are "Do You Want To," "So Fly," and the reggae inspired "Feel Like A Woman" featuring Bei Maejor.
Overall I'll give it 7.5/10 stars since it is a Mixtape. I'm definitely looking forward to hearing the official Album when it drops later this year.
